Frequently asked questions about llms.txt
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt controls which pages traditional search engine crawlers (Googlebot, Bingbot) are allowed to visit. llms.txt is designed specifically for AI language models and describes your brand, your services and your expertise in a format that AI models can understand and use for responses and citations.
Which AI platforms recognise llms.txt?
None of the major platforms currently document that they use the file. Ahrefs analysed 137,210 domains in May 2026: 97 % of all llms.txt files were never fetched, and AI search bots accounted for 1.1 % of the fetches. Google has described the effect as purely speculative. Create the file as a precaution — it takes ten minutes and cannot do any harm — not as a growth driver. Do I need an llms.txt to be cited by AI?
No. AI models cite content without the file, and there is no data to show that llms.txt in itself increases your citations — this would require a controlled experiment, which no one has published. What we HAVE measured across 465 Danish websites is that pages with better technical setup are cited more frequently as a source (77.9 versus 72.7, p=0.000). You should therefore start by ensuring crawler access, readability without JavaScript and structured data.
What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
llms.txt is a brief overview (typically 200–400 words) containing the key information. llms-full.txt is an expanded version containing FAQs, case studies, team information and a detailed product description — for AI platforms that require more context. Geoa generates both automatically.
