How much does an advert cost in ChatGPT — and should you buy one?
2026-09-10 · Martin Nymann · 6 min reading
Advertising on ChatGPT opened up to Danish businesses in September 2026. There is no fixed price — OpenAI recommends starting at 3–5 dollars per click. Three questions will determine whether it is worth the money for you.
Key takeaways
- There is no fixed price and no minimum spend. You set your own maximum bid, and OpenAI recommends in its documentation that you start at 3–5 dollars per click.
- OpenAI does not show adverts to users on the Plus, Pro or any Business plans. If you sell to businesses, a large proportion of your customers are on a plan where the advert is never displayed.
- The advert appears below the reply in its own box. Being mentioned by name within the reply itself is organic and cannot be purchased.
- A daily budget is an average, not a cap: spending may be up to twice the average on any one day, but no more than seven times the average over seven days.
- There are four things that cost nothing and won’t go to waste if you decide to buy adverts later: text on the page itself, access for AI bots, clear information about the business, and clear answers to customers’ questions.
There is no fixed price. You set your own bid, and OpenAI recommends starting at 3–5 dollars per click. Advertising on ChatGPT opened up to Danish, Swedish and Norwegian businesses in September 2026, and you can create an account today. But for most small businesses, there’s a cheaper option to try first. Here are the three questions that will determine whether an advert is worth the money for you:
- Do your customers even see the adverts?
- Do you already have the answer?
- Can you control what you pay?

How much does an advert cost in ChatGPT?
The price is set by an auction, not by a fixed price. You choose the maximum you’re willing to pay, and then pay for what you’ve received. OpenAI states in its own documentation that it recommends starting with a maximum bid of 3–5 dollars per click. Ten clicks a day therefore amounts to 30–50 dollars — every day, if the advert runs daily.
There are two ways to buy, and your choice determines what you pay:
| You choose | You pay for | Matches |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks | Every valid click onto your page | You want visitors who might become customers |
| Impressions | Every thousand impressions of the advert | You want to raise awareness of your brand |
There is no minimum spend. You can set a daily budget or a total budget for the campaign, and you pay afterwards — ‘postpay’, as OpenAI calls it. When you add a payment card, your bank may show a temporary hold of 50 or 100 dollars; this is not a payment and will be released automatically.
Question 1: Are your customers even seeing the adverts?
This is the question most people skip over, and it’s the cheapest one to find out the answer to. OpenAI does not show adverts to users on the Plus, Pro or any Business plans — nor to accounts registered as belonging to under-18s. The adverts only reach those using ChatGPT for free or on the Go subscription.
If you’re selling to other businesses, this is crucial. A buyer, an accountant or an operations manager who uses ChatGPT all day is usually on a paid plan — and so your advert cannot reach them, no matter how much you bid. The organic result can. If, on the other hand, you’re selling to private consumers, a large proportion of them are on the free plan, so the advert is a genuine channel.
Question 2: Are you already featured in the search result itself?
An advert in ChatGPT is placed below the answer, in its own box. It contains:
- Your company name and your logo
- A headline and a line of text
- An image
- A link to your website
It does not appear within the answer itself. If your company is mentioned by name when someone asks ChatGPT about a supplier like you, this is still something you get organically — it cannot be bought.
That’s why the order matters. If you buy adverts whilst ChatGPT doesn’t mention you at all, you’re paying to appear below an answer that points to a competitor. There’s nothing wrong with doing that – it’s just the expensive solution to a problem that can often be fixed for free on the same day.
We analysed 465 Danish company websites. The sites that were technically sound were used significantly more often as sources in AI responses than those that weren’t. What made the difference were simple things: that the text appears on the page itself and doesn’t only show up once the page has finished loading; that the AI bots are allowed to read it; and that it’s clear who the company is and what it does.
Check your own website for free — it takes two minutes and requires no payment details. You’ll find out whether ChatGPT mentions you today, and exactly what’s missing.
Question 3: Can you control what you pay?
Partly — and it’s worth knowing this beforehand, not afterwards. A daily budget with OpenAI is an average, not a daily cap. Their own documentation states that spending on a single day can be up to double the daily budget, but no more than seven times the daily budget over seven days. So, if you set aside 200 kroner a day, a single day could cost 400.
Nor can you determine when the advert is displayed. You can provide OpenAI with some topics and words that describe where you’re relevant, but, according to their own description, these aren’t precise keywords and offer no guarantee that the advert will appear in specific conversations. If you want a fixed limit, you should choose a total campaign budget rather than a daily budget.
What you can do first, and which won’t be a waste of time
These four things cost nothing, work regardless of whether you buy adverts later, and most can be done in a morning:
- Make sure the text appears on the page itself. Many newer websites only generate the text once the page has opened in a browser. AI bots don’t wait for this, so they see an almost empty page.
- Give the bots access. A single file on your domain determines whether ChatGPT and the others are allowed to read the content. If they’re blocked, nothing else will help.
- Write down who you are, where you are, and what you do. Not as a fancy homepage, but as basic information a machine can read: name, address, services, prices, opening hours.
- Answer the questions your customers actually ask. A paragraph that clearly answers a single question is exactly what an AI can extract and use.
Neither of these requires you to know how to code. Start with the free test, and you’ll know which of the four you’re missing — instead of just guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Can you buy adverts on ChatGPT in Denmark?
Yes. OpenAI’s own overview of where self-service is available lists Denmark, Sweden and Norway as available from September 2026, along with the rest of the EU. Larger advertisers can also get started through OpenAI’s own advertising sales team or an agency partner.
How much does an advert on ChatGPT cost?
There is no fixed price. The price is determined by an auction, where you set your own maximum bid; OpenAI recommends in its documentation starting at 3–5 dollars per click. You can choose to pay per click or per thousand impressions, and there is no minimum spend.
Do all ChatGPT users see the adverts?
No. OpenAI does not show adverts to users on the Plus, Pro or any Business plans, nor to accounts registered as being under 18 years of age. If you sell to businesses, a large proportion of your customers are therefore on a plan where the advert will never be displayed.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. The advert appears below the answer in its own box, not within the answer itself. If your business is mentioned by name in the answer itself, this is organic and not for sale.
Is a daily budget a cap on how much I can spend in a day?
No. OpenAI describes the daily budget as an average: spending may be up to double that amount on any single day, but no more than seven times the daily budget over seven days. If you want a fixed cap, you should choose a total campaign budget.
All information regarding prices, budgets and who sees the adverts is taken from OpenAI’s own documentation dated 10 September 2026: ‘Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics’, ‘Billing & Payment’ and ‘Ads Manager Availability’. The amounts are OpenAI’s own figures in dollars and have not been converted, as exchange rates fluctuate. We sell organic AI visibility ourselves and are therefore not a neutral party — that is why the sources are listed here, so you can verify each figure.
GeoA’s own figures: 465 search-visible Danish company websites scanned on 21 July 2026 and 576 AI responses collected on 26 July 2026.
