How much does it cost to be featured on AI? Budget guide 2026

2026-08-03 · Martin Nymann · 8 min reading

From 0 kr to over 15,000 kr per month. Three price tiers based on prices taken from the providers’ own websites on 3 August 2026 — not from review sites, which are often inaccurate.

Key takeaways

  • The most costly errors are free to fix: a robots.txt that blocks GPTBot, empty catalogue profiles, and a missing Google Business Profile.
  • Tools typically cost 299–4,500 kr/month for an SME-relevant plan; a full-service agency costs 5,000–15,000 kr/month.
  • Profound recorded 11.84 billion AI citations: around 57 per cent link to the brand’s own website. Spend your money there first.
  • Review sites often get the prices wrong — four of them listed Peec AI as 10–15 per cent too high in the same week that the supplier’s own website showed prices of €85–425.
  • The only thing that technology cannot buy is a recommendation: p=0.000 for being cited as a source, p=0.988 for being recommended by name.

AI visibility costs anywhere from 0 kr to over 15,000 kr a month — and most SMEs don’t need to be at the expensive end of the scale. You can get a long way for free, and a tool like Geoa starts at 299 kr/month. Here are the three budget tiers with prices taken directly from the providers’ own pricing pages — not from review sites, which are often incorrect.

What exactly is the money supposed to solve?

Two different things, and they’re constantly being confused. The first is making your own website readable and citable by AI engines. The second is measuring whether the engines actually mention you. The first is a one-off task plus maintenance; the second is an ongoing subscription.

There’s a good reason to spend the money on your own site first. Profound analysed 11.84 billion AI citations across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity (April–July 2026) and found that around 57 per cent of all citations point to the brand’s own website — highest for Gemini at 69 per cent, lowest for ChatGPT at 47 per cent. Your own domain is therefore the largest single source that search engines draw on.

The variation is worth noting: in the same analysis, the difference between the best and worst performers within the same sector was as much as 43 percentage points. There is therefore scope to gain ground without spending more money than your competitors — it’s all about what’s on your site.

Our own figures point in the same direction: across 465 Danish company websites, 61 per cent of the sources cited were the companies’ own websites — and the ‘home turf’ accounted for the largest share among those search engines that sourced their information from a search plugin. That’s something you can do something about without paying anyone a subscription fee.

How much does it cost to do it yourself?

0 kr and two to four hours a month. It’s not a stopgap solution — in fact, it’s where most SMEs should start, because the most costly mistakes are free to fix.

  • Check robots.txt: 0 kr — ten minutes. If you’re blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot without realising it, everything else is a waste of time.
  • llms.txt: 0 kr — under an hour, no developer required.
  • Google Business Profile: 0 kr — fill it in completely.
  • Directory profiles: 0 kr — Krak, De Gule Sider, findformig, Trustpilot and LinkedIn, all with the same name, address and telephone number.
  • Schema markup: 0 kr with a plugin, otherwise one hour’s work by a developer.

The one item that isn’t free is server-side rendering: if your site renders the content in the browser, AI crawlers can’t read it, and this usually requires a developer. This is the most expensive and most important aspect. The reason is that 1 in 20 Danish business websites are effectively invisible to ChatGPT.

How much do the tools cost?

From under 300 kr to just over 4,000 kr a month for an SME-relevant plan. The prices below are the suppliers’ own, converted to Danish kroner, and were verified on 3 August 2026. Please note in particular that several review sites quoted Peec AI 10–15 per cent too high in the same week — hence the source is cited here.

The column on the far right is the one that most often determines the value of an SME without a marketing department. Most tools measure and provide you with a report. If any corrections need to be made, it’s either you, a developer or a tool that does it for you.

How much does an agency cost?

Typically 5,000–15,000 kr a month for a full service, and it can easily be worth the money if you have neither the time nor the technical resources. What you’re paying for is execution — not access to secret knowledge. Everything a GEO agency does from a technical perspective is publicly documented, including here on this page.

The maths is simple: if the agency costs 8,000 kr/month and a tool costs 299 kr/month, the agency must deliver the equivalent of just over 7,700 kr in time and content every month. For a company with a marketing manager, this is rarely the case. For a trades business with no one to handle the task, it might be.

What do we know about the return on investment?

Less than the industry claims. There are no Danish figures on the proportion of people who act directly on AI recommendations — we previously wrote “38 per cent of Danish consumers”, citing Bain as the source; that figure does not appear in any Bain report and has been removed. The closest real figure: Bain (Feb. 2025) found that 42 per cent ask language models for purchase recommendations, and that around 80 per cent rely on AI summaries in at least 40 per cent of their searches. This is US data, not Danish.

And our own dataset sets a limit on what money can buy: technical setup is a strong predictor of whether your site is used as a source (p=0.000) — and says nothing about whether your company is recommended by name (p=0.988). The full analysis can be found in ‘What determines whether AI mentions your company’.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to become visible in AI as an SME?
From 0 kr to over 15,000 kr a month. If you do it yourself, it takes two to four hours a month and costs nothing — apart from server rendering, if your site builds the content in the browser. A tool for ongoing monitoring and corrections typically costs 299–4,500 kr/month, and a full-service agency 5,000–15,000 kr/month.

Can I get started for free?
Yes, and you should. The most expensive errors are free to fix: a robots.txt that blocks GPTBot, missing directory profiles, an empty Google Business Profile. It takes an afternoon and costs nothing. Only buy a tool once you want to monitor on an ongoing basis whether it’s working.

Why do review sites show different prices?
Because they’re often out of date. The prices here are taken from the suppliers’ own pricing pages on 3 August 2026. At least four third-party review sites listed Peec AI at $95/$245/$495 that same week, whilst the supplier’s own website showed €85/€205/€425. Always check the price with the supplier themselves before making a decision.

Is it more expensive than SEO?
No, it’s typically cheaper at the tool level. However, the work involved is the same: readable content, accurate data about the company, and coverage on sites other than your own. So you don’t need to set aside a new budget on top of SEO — you just need to allocate part of it differently.

What do I get for my money with Geoa?
Starting at 299 kr/month, GEO provides scores, rankings, citations, Auto Fix and a weekly report. The Pro plan at 799 kr/month adds content generation, GSC + GA4 and competitor monitoring. The Business plan at 1,499 kr/month adds local SEO, a team and API access. Full details are on the pricing page.
