What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization explained

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the discipline of optimizing your content so it becomes the direct answer — in AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, in Google's AI Overviews and in classic answer surfaces like featured snippets. Where SEO fights for a click in a list, AEO fights to be the answer itself. AEO is closely related to GEO, only with its focus on the answer surface rather than the generative engine.

What AEO is — the definition

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: structuring and phrasing your content so that an answer engine — an AI assistant or a search engine that gives one direct answer — chooses your content specifically as the answer to the user's question.

An "answer engine" is any surface that answers a question directly instead of showing a list of links: ChatGPT and Perplexity, which answer in prose with source citations; Google's AI Overviews at the top of the search result; and the classic answer boxes (featured snippets, "People also ask"). AEO is about becoming that answer — not just ranking near it.

The concept overlaps with SEO and GEO, but the angle is the answer surface: how does your business become the answer, not just a result you can click on?

AEO vs. SEO vs. GEO — what's the difference?

The three terms overlap and are often used interchangeably, but each is aimed at a different goal:

In practice, AEO and GEO are two sides of the same shift: away from ten blue links, toward one answer. GEO is the academically established term (formalized in Princeton/Georgia Tech research, KDD '24) for optimizing for generative engines; AEO is used more broadly for every answer surface, including Google's own. Much of the work is the same — and what works for one usually strengthens the other.

Where the answers appear — the four answer surfaces

To win at AEO you need to know the surfaces where the battle plays out:

  • AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity). The user asks a question and gets one combined answer with 2-4 recommended sources. Here citability, structured data and your entity decide whether you get named.
  • Google AI Overviews. Google increasingly shows an AI-generated answer at the top — before the blue links. It often pulls from pages that are nowhere near #1 organically, but that answer the question most clearly.
  • Featured snippets and "People also ask". The classic answer boxes reward content that answers one question precisely and in a structured way (definition, list, table).
  • Voice and assistant answers. When the answer is read aloud, there is no page 2 — only one answer. Structure and precision decide everything.

How your content becomes the answer

Answer engines reward content that is easy to understand, extract and trust. The most important signals:

  • Answer one question directly and early. Put the short, concrete answer in the first couple of sentences — that is the block AIs and snippets lift out.
  • Structure with questions as headings. H2s phrased as the questions customers actually ask make the content easy to match.
  • Use lists, tables and short paragraphs. Structured content is extracted more easily than long walls of text.
  • Add structured data (schema). FAQPage, HowTo and Organization schema make the answer machine-readable.
  • Be citable. Concrete numbers, dates and sources make your content safe to cite — vague superlatives get skipped by the AI.
  • Make sure AI can read the page. If your page needs JavaScript to show its content, the AI crawlers see an empty shell — check it with our free AI Readability Check.

These are the same signals the GEO test measures — so your AEO and GEO work is really one and the same effort.

AEO in practice for a Nordic SMB

For a local business, AEO is very concrete. When a customer asks an AI for "the best [your industry] nearby", there is room for 2-4 names in the answer. If you are not among them, you lose a lead you never saw. The good news: the vast majority of Nordic SMBs have not worked on AEO yet — our own measurements show that 89% of 465 scanned Danish company websites had no llms.txt (our own measurement, July 2026). Whoever acts now takes the spot.

Getting started with AEO

  1. Measure your starting point. Run the free GEO test (60 seconds, no login) and see which signals keep you out of the answers.
  2. Make sure AI can read your page. Check robots.txt and JavaScript reliance with the AI Readability Check.
  3. Make the content answer-friendly. Answer concrete questions directly, with question headings and short paragraphs.
  4. Add structured data. FAQPage and HowTo schema make your answers machine-readable.
  5. Publish an llms.txt. Use the llms.txt generator — it gives AI a curated overview.

If you want it done automatically, the Geoa platform measures and fixes these signals for you via the WordPress or Shopify integration — from DKK 299/mo with a 14-day free trial, no credit card required. Read more in the complete GEO guide.

Frequently asked questions about AEO

What is AEO in short?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) means optimizing your content so it becomes the direct answer in AI assistants, Google AI Overviews and classic answer boxes — not just one result in a list.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap heavily. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the academically established term for optimizing for generative engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity; AEO is used more broadly for every answer surface, including Google's own AI Overviews and featured snippets. The work is largely the same.

Does AEO replace my SEO?

No. SEO is about ranking in the results list; AEO is about becoming the answer itself. They complement each other — highly answer-friendly content also strengthens your classic rankings.

How do I measure whether I am the answer?

Run the free GEO test (60 seconds, no login). It scores the technical signals that decide whether AI can find, understand and cite you — the same signals AEO is about.

Can a small business win at AEO?

Yes — often more easily than a large one. AEO rewards precise, well-structured answers over domain size, and most Nordic SMBs have not even started yet. You can get a long way on your own with the free tools.
