What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization explained
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline of making your business visible and citable in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity — just as SEO does in Google's search results. GEO is about becoming one of the 2-4 businesses the AI actually recommends when a customer asks. The term was formalized in research from Princeton and Georgia Tech (KDD '24).
What GEO is — the definition
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: systematically optimizing your content, your technical signals and your online presence so that AI models choose your business as a reliable source when they answer users' questions in your industry.
The difference from classic search is fundamental. Google's results show ten blue links on page one — all ten can get the click. An AI answer typically names 2-4 businesses specifically. The rest don't exist for that user at that moment. There is no page 2.
The term was academically formalized in the paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (Aggarwal et al., Princeton University / Georgia Tech, KDD '24) — the first research to quantify what makes content citable for generative AI systems. The key findings: adding concrete statistics, citing authoritative sources and using quotations each lifted visibility markedly, with combined gains of up to 40% in generative engines' answers — and the effect varies by domain.
Why AI search changes everything now
The shift is not a forecast — it is measurable today:
- ChatGPT handles around 2.5 billion prompts a day (OpenAI via TechCrunch, July 2025).
- Perplexity passed 780 million queries in a single month as early as May 2025 (the company's CEO via TechCrunch).
- In 2024, Gartner predicted a 25% drop in traditional search volume by 2026, precisely because AI assistants are taking over the job of searching (Gartner).
- Google shows AI Overviews at the top of a growing share of searches — the answer arrives before the blue links.
For Nordic and European SMBs the consequence is concrete: if your potential customer asks an AI for "the best accountant in town" and you are not in the answer, you have lost a lead you never knew existed. The opportunity is just as concrete: the vast majority of your competitors have not prioritized GEO yet — our own measurements below show how large the gaps are. Whoever acts now claims the spot.
GEO vs. SEO vs. AEO — what's the difference?
The three terms overlap, but they optimize for different goals:
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in Google's blue links | Win featured snippets and direct answers | Get cited in AI-generated answers |
| Success metric | Rankings, clicks | Position 0, answer boxes | Citations, share of voice in AI answers |
| Key signals | Backlinks, authority, keywords | Structured answer format | Citability, structured data, E-E-A-T, llms.txt, entity |
The point is not to choose between them. SEO and GEO complement each other — much of what makes content citable for AI also strengthens classic search. But GEO requires signals that SEO tools neither measure nor fix: AI crawler access, llms.txt, citable content structure and a machine-readable business entity. Read the in-depth comparison in GEO vs. SEO: the difference explained.
How the AI search engines work — and why they differ
The AI search engines source their knowledge differently, and that determines how you become visible in them:
ChatGPT (OpenAI) combines training data from crawled web pages with real-time search. It rewards content with clear definitions, lists and FAQ format — and its real-time search draws on the Bing index, so Bing visibility matters more than most people think.
Claude (Anthropic) uses web search to answer current questions and places clear weight on source credibility and precision — well-sourced, well-documented content performs best.
Gemini and Google AI Overviews build on Google's search index. Your classic SEO authority plays a role, but content structure and E-E-A-T signals weigh heavily — and the AI Overview box often pulls from pages that are nowhere near #1 in the blue links.
Perplexity is built as an answer engine with visible source citations in every answer. It cites aggressively — and rewards pages that answer one question precisely with dated facts.
Beyond these, there is also Microsoft Copilot (which draws on the Bing index), along with a range of smaller engines. Geoa measures your visibility in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity plus Google AI Overviews — while also optimizing the Bing signals Copilot builds on.
The 15 dimensions AI judges you on
Geoa's GEO Score measures the technical and content signals that determine whether AI can find, understand and cite your business. The engine scores 15 dimensions with weights that sum to 100%:
- AI Crawler Accessibility
- Server-Side Rendering
- llms.txt
- Structured Data
- Basic Page Signals
- Content Citability
- Brand Entity
- Security
- Performance
- Mobile Adaptation
- Internal Links
- E-E-A-T Content Quality
- Platform Optimization
- Schema Recommendations
- Empirical Content Data
Each dimension is a concrete, measurable signal — from whether GPTBot and ClaudeBot are even allowed to crawl your site, through llms.txt and schema markup, to whether your copy contains the concrete numbers and sources AIs are trained to cite. The free GEO test shows your score on all 15 in 60 seconds.
AI crawlers: training vs. real time
There are two types of AI crawlers, and you need to allow both:
- Training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot) collect content to train the AI models. Block them in robots.txt and tomorrow's models won't know your business exists.
- Real-time crawlers (ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, Perplexity-User) fetch fresh information when a user asks a question. Block them and the AI can't cite you in current answers.
One important technical detail: AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your site only shows its content after JavaScript rendering, the crawlers see an empty shell. Check for yourself with our free AI Readability Check — it shows side by side what a human and an AI crawler see.
Citation drift — why GEO is an ongoing discipline
AI answers are not static. Models get updated, real-time sources shift, and competitors publish new content — so the businesses the AI cites today are not necessarily the ones it cites a month from now. The phenomenon is called citation drift, and it means one-off optimization decays over time.
That makes GEO a monitoring discipline on par with SEO: measure your visibility continuously, notice when you lose a citation, and see who took it over. That is exactly why Geoa scans weekly (daily on Pro and Business) and alerts you when something changes.
Status in the Nordics: what our own measurements show
We continuously scan Nordic business websites with the same engine that powers the free GEO test — and publish the numbers with methodology and caveats:
- 89% of 465 scanned Danish business websites had no llms.txt (our own measurement, July 2026 — see the full analysis with method).
- Danish law firms score lowest on AI readability; 51% lack structured data (the analysis here).
- Roughly 1 in 20 Danish business websites is effectively invisible to ChatGPT (see why).
- In the GEO Benchmark 2026 we have live-scored the Nordic region's 40 largest companies with the same engine — even the giants fail on several dimensions.
The conclusion across the measurements: GEO maturity in the Nordics is low. That is bad news for most businesses — and a concrete opportunity for those who act first. All our numbers are published with sample size, date and caveats — see how we measure.
Getting started with GEO: checklist and free tools
You can get a long way with a structured approach:
- Measure your current visibility. Run the free GEO test (60 seconds, no login) and see which dimensions drag your score down.
- Open up to the AI crawlers. Check your robots.txt and JavaScript reliance with the AI Readability Check.
- Publish an llms.txt. Use the llms.txt generator — a finished file in one minute.
- Add structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema are the foundation of your machine-readable entity.
- Make your content citable. Answer concrete questions with concrete, dated facts — and keep the GEO checklist at hand along the way.
If you want it done automatically, that is exactly what the Geoa platform does: it measures every dimension, fixes the technical issues via the WordPress or Shopify integration, and monitors the effect week by week. Frequently asked questions about GEO
What is GEO in short?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means optimizing your business's content and technical signals so that AI search engines like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity pick you as a source and recommend you in their answers.
Is GEO the same as AI SEO?
In practice, yes — GEO, AI SEO and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are often used interchangeably. GEO is the academically established term (Princeton/Georgia Tech, KDD '24) for optimizing content for generative AI answers; AEO more narrowly covers answer boxes and featured snippets.
Does GEO replace my SEO efforts?
No. SEO and GEO complement each other — highly citable content strengthens both. But GEO requires signals classic SEO tools don't measure: AI crawler access, llms.txt, structured data and a machine-readable business entity.
How fast does GEO work?
Your first measurement takes 60 seconds with the free GEO test, and technical fixes show up in your next scan. How fast the AI answers change depends on industry and competition — we don't promise an average lift until we have measured one we can stand behind.
Is llms.txt enough to become visible in AI answers?
No. llms.txt is one of 15 dimensions. Whether AI engines mention you also depends on schema markup, content citability, E-E-A-T signals and your entity across the web — which is why the GEO test measures every dimension and prioritizes what matters most.
Can I do GEO myself, or does it require a tool?
You can get a long way on your own with the GEO checklist and the free tools. A tool like Geoa automates the fixes and monitors citation drift continuously — from DKK 299/mo with a 14-day free trial, no credit card required.
